The Case for Adult Orthodontics

For many adults, having braces seems almost as bad as having an imperfect smile. The belief that orthodontics is for preteens and teenagers is outdated and untrue. Men and women of all ages deserve to experience the benefits of beautiful smiles!

There are a million reasons why adults choose not to pursue orthodontics. While some of those excuses may be valid, we believe the benefits of braces far outweigh the cons.

Here are the top three reasons to consider adult orthodontics:

1. You have options.

Are you picturing a lanky preteen with wires that make his lips protrude and teeth that are almost completely hidden by colorful brackets? These braces may still exist, but most dentists (like ours) use sleek and elegant modern wires and brackets that are much less distracting. Today’s traditional metal braces are commonly used because of these benefits:

  • Affordability
  • Durability
  • Less responsibility
  • Fast results
  • Ability to treat complex dental issues

Thanks to advances in orthodontics, adults can also choose Invisalign® clear aligners. This may be the most popular option among adult patients because of its discreet appearance. With Invisalign, patients can also remove the aligners while eating or giving a presentation at work. However, they must keep in mind that the aligner must be worn at least 22 hours per day to provide desired results.

At the office of Timothy Mickiewicz, DDS, patients also have access to AcceleDent® Optima™ to speed up the orthodontic process. This innovative device speeds up tooth movement by 50 percent and decreases orthodontic discomfort.

2. Orthodontics improves oral and overall health.

Crooked, crowded, and gapped teeth make a person more susceptible to oral health problems like cavities and gum disease. Misaligned teeth often create spaces where foods become stuck, resulting in an overgrowth of disease-causing bacteria. When oral health problems go untreated, they can lead to overall health problems like heart disease and diabetes.

Additionally, orthodontic issues may lead to teeth grinding, temporomandibular joint disorder, or sleep apnea. In many cases, these problems are related.

3. A better smile can improve your home, work, and love life.

A beautiful smile does two incredible things: it makes you feel more confident in every area of life AND it makes others perceive you as more intelligent, successful, interesting, and attractive. (This has been proven in a study completed by the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry).

According to that same study, 74 percent of American adults believe that an unattractive smile can negatively affect a person’s career success.

Even one of these without the other could have a huge impact on a person’s life! Imagine having enough confidence to ask out that guy or girl you’ve had a crush on for years, let your friends finally set you up on a blind date, or ask your boss for the raise you deserve. All of these things could be life-changing.

This aspect alone convinces us that everyone deserves to have a radiant smile because everyone deserves to live their best life.
